Empowering Women, Transforming Communities

For International Women’s Day 2025, we celebrate the inspiring strides made through our Improved Sanitation and Housing Condition Initiative (ISHI). Launched in April 2024 with support from the Global Mission Fund (GMF), this initiative, implemented by Habitat Tanzania in partnership with Water Aid and Tanzania Women Architect for Humanity (TAWAH), aims to address housing, land tenure, water, sanitation, and hygiene challenges for low-income households

As part of the partnership the project has trained 28 women in Mhaga village, Pwani region, in sustainable brick-making and low-cost house construction, led by professional engineers. Certified by the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA), these women are now equipped to compete for construction contracts from private individuals and government agencies, breaking barriers and creating brighter futures.

In collaboration with TAWAH, and as part of the training, the women participated in the construction of 11 low-cost houses in Dar es Salaam and Pwani in November 2024. In tandem, through the partnership with Water Aid two pay-per-use toilet facilities were also constructed in Arusha market. The toilet facilities are now serving 180 female traders and over 3000 market goers while generating income for home improvement loans through saving groups. Habitat Tanzania is also providing business development and financial training to enhance their capacity to grow their businesses and income.

A milestone moment…

The women aspire to use their skills to build their own homes and generate income to support their families and community.  We are honoured to be a part of their story and to support their journey towards economic independence and empowerment.

This story of resilience and empowerment embodies the theme of International Women’s Day—embracing equity and driving progress.

Together, we continue to build hope, dignity, and opportunity. Here’s to the women shaping communities and inspiring change!
